WEIRD HAIR TREATMENTS FROM HISTORY

If history has taught us anything, it is that people have been crazy since time immemorial. We will simply do nearly anything to look good! We'vebeen obsessed with making our hair more beautiful ever since Ug first crawled from his cave and got a good look at his reflection in the nearest puddle.

Treatments and remedies for better, more beautiful hair have been with us for millennia. It seems that as humans, were always trying to control our tresses and mold them into the current fashions despite the potential for damage. Using everything from animal dung to modern day styling products, humans have battled their hair for generation upon generation.

One memory of a smelly perm from the 80's will remind you of just how mad we can be when it comes to our hair. What did we use before we had straighteners, curling tongs and entire stores devoted to hair care and styling products Here are a few of the weirdest, nuttiest things humanity has tried as the history of hair has progressed.

Ancient Egypt
The Egyptians were some of the first of the ancient peoples to become famous for their love of hair and hair products. In modern times, argan oil from this region is the latest miracle product for sleek shiny, hair. In days of old, animal fats were used instead. Frankincense and myrrh were also massaged into hair to keep it soft and odor-free.

Perhaps the oddest part of the ancient Egyptian hair care routine was the removal of their hair. Most people of this time believed that hair, whether on the head or the body, was unclean. (To be fair, hair back then would have been an excellent breeding ground for fleas and ticks considering the bathing options.) Only the lowest ranks kept their natural hair. The higher ranks removed it, all of it. Those elaborate hairstyles you see in hieroglyphics are wigs made from human hair and/or palm fibers.
Victorian England
Yes, even our own nation was not immune to hair insanity. Curls were all the rage in this time period but electricity Not so much. Gas was used for energy until the very end of the 19th century. Even then only the wealthiest of London could afford to have electricity in their homes. So how does a girl get pretty curls without a set of electric curling tongs

They use a set of tongs that have to first be heated in the fire. The business end of these tongs was set in the fire to heat. Hair was carefully wrapped in special curling paper to protect the hair from being scorched or melted. A great deal of care and no small amount of skill had to be employed to prevent burns to the scalp and face.

Recent Decades
The aforementioned foul-smelling perm was not the only torture that modern women have endured to get the hair they want. As recently as the 90's a horribly ugly device was put to use in order to highlight hair. It's hard to believe now that we know how to use foils and balayage that a tight plastic bonnet was once the best way to get sun-kissed hair!

The so-called frosting cap has small holes through which the some hair was tugged by a small a hook, leaving the remainder protected under the cap. Bleach was then rubbed over the surface of the cap and the hair that had been pulled free. The result was a polka-dotty, streaky highlight that started about an inch away from the scalp. (Todays methods are so much better!)

History can teach us so much, even if its how weird we are about our hair. We can only wonder what generations to come will think of our current methods!
