HAIR CARE DURING YOUR WORKOUT

Exercise is good for the body but it can be tough on your hair. Sure, the increased blood flow can help your hair grow stronger and a healthy body equates to healthy hair. But the pony tails and sweat can damage the strands even while youre improving the roots. Taking care of your hair during and after your workout will keep it looking good, in the gym and out.

Sweat
Sweating is arguable the best way to naturally rid the body of toxins as well as cooling the skin. While we may not like to get all sweaty, its good for the body and a natural result of a good workout. Despite these facts, its terribly hard on the hair.

As far as your hair is concern, the salts in your sweat arent much different from those in the ocean. Anyone whos been on holiday at the sea knows how much damage salt water does to your hair. Salt attracts moisture and will draw it right out of your hair and your scalp whether youre at the shore or the gym.
An absorbent cotton headband can manage sweat but a cap or hat is a serious no-no at the gym. While a cap can look tom-boy-cute, covering your head creates a sauna underneath and youll sweat more. A large percentage of your body heat escapes via your head. Dont trap it under a hat. If you need the brim to keep the sun out of your eyes, use a visor instead.

Ponytails
Ponytails are the typical gym go-to hairstyle for managing sweat. If you do it right, its not a bad idea. It will keep you hair from tangling and leave your neck cool. (A loose bun will work just as well.) However, a poorly executed pony can leave you with a line of breakage at the elastic.

Its tempting to tie your hair back in a tight pony and wrap the elastic as snugly as possible for a class or cardio session. You hair may not fall into your eyes but it might break. A tight elastic band compresses the hair and bends it and the metal crimp can tear at strands.
Doing this repeatedly can create a weak point in the hair. Think of bending a paper clip back and forth in the same spot. Eventually it snaps, right Same goes for your hair.

Use a softer hair tie with no metal and a looser pony tail. Keep strands off your face with a soft headband made for working out. Vary the position of your ponytail -- high one day, low the next so you arent impacting one spot more than the rest.

Cleansing
You dont want to lug a bag full of hair care products to the gym. You want to get in and out in as fast a manner as possible. An all-in-one hair and body product can seem like the perfect solution.

Not all hair and body wash combos are created equally. Many are too harsh for your hair and dont pack enough conditioners to keep it soft. Read labels carefully if you must go this route and consider adding a leave-in conditioner to the mix.

Travel containers are small and light and you can refill them with your usual shampoo and conditioner. Most airline-approved containers are big enough for a weeks use and wont weigh your gym bag down. Whatever products you choose, do be sure to wash that salty, drying sweat from your hair immediately after a workout.

Your work out is good for your body. Take some care to ensure its not bad for your hair.
